Hoje, só me interessa que estou feliz e orgulhoso pelo que eles alcançaram pelo meu País. Quanto mais fui sabendo deles, mais aprendi a estimá-los.

Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LM2x)

Originally two boats would qualify for this event. A qualification ruling meant a further one boat would be added making the top three the magic positions. This event started off with the biggest number of entries, 17 countries. Six boats remained. Three spots were available.

After their Lucerne Rowing World Cup second place at the start of this month New Zealand looked to be the crew to beat. The New Zealanders confirmed this by winning their heat three days ago and the semifinal yesterday. Storm Uru and Peter Taylor of New Zealand are both former Under 23 Champions. Uru is 23 years old, Taylor 24.

Following closely behind New Zealand, Douglas Vandor and Cameron Sylvester of Canada appeared to be the closest real challengers to the New Zealanders. The Czech Republic was not far back in third. As the last 500m came into view Uru and Taylor continued to look long in the water with power left in the tank. Vandor and Sylvester looked exhausted and appeared to just be hanging in there. Then seemingly from out of nowhere, from the back of the field, the Portuguese came flying. Pedro Fraga and Nuno Mendes must have been boosted by the football results of their nation and rating 44 they overtook Slovakia, then Spain, then the Czech Republic. Fraga and Mendes were moving on Canada.

At the line New Zealand remained in the lead, Portugal had literally flown through to second and Canada must thank their lucky stars that three boats qualify. New Zealand looked like Olympic qualification had not sunk in. It had for the Portuguese.

“Overall it was a good race and we qualified. The theme has been not to take any other crews lightly and it paid dividends today and we kept on pushing through and it was close at the end.”

Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LM2x) - Semifinals

Semifinal One
Coming into this qualification regatta New Zealand’s Storm Uru and Peter Taylor looked to be the crew to beat. They had finished second at the Lucerne Rowing World Cup proving their boat speed against the best in the world. Today they took over in the lead of semifinal one and were dominating the race even before they hit the first 500m mark. This left the rest of the field to fight for the remaining two spots that would mean advancement to the final. All remaining five boats were close to each other.

By the half-way point Spain’s Jesus Gonzalez Alvarez and Juan Zunzunegui Guimerans had moved into second with Slovenia following in third and Portugal now back a bit in fourth. Coming into the final sprint Uru and Taylor looked comfortable at a steady 36 stroke rate that they had maintained down the course. Then Portugal’s Pedro Fraga Nuno Mendes charged. Rating 39 the Portuguese had closed on Slovenia and were coming after Spain. At the line Slovenia had missed out. New Zealand, Portugal and Spain earn the vital A-Final spots.

“Portugal was a surprise…on Sunday we won the heat [Portugal was fifth]. We know all six or seven teams are all close in times and we know that Portugal has a good final 500m sprint. We felt it was easier on Sunday than today. We know it is a very close race for the three spots. It is possible New Zealand will be ahead a few seconds but it will be very close racing for the rest of the field.”

Repechage 2
Canada’s Douglas Vandor and Cameron Sylvester got out to an early lead in the second repechage. Last year, with a different partner, Vandor had finished twelfth – one spot outside of Olympic qualification – now with Sylvester he is trying again. Pedro Fraga and Nuno Mendes of Portugal moved into second position and were the closest challengers to Canada. Russia’s Mikhail Izotov and Andrey Shevel followed in third. Coming into the line Portugal pulled out a huge 45 stroke rate sprint and nearly overtook Canada. Canada, Portugal and Russia advance to the semifinal. Croatia and Finland will not be going to the Olympics in this event.

“I think our mentality today was more that we were not taking anyone for granted. Yesterday we learned from that. We treated it a little more as ‘a heat’ but today it was a little more serious for our mentality throughout the entire race. We’re happy with the race. Doug and I have been rowing together for just two months. We’re getting better each time we get on the water and learning new things each day and if we apply it to the racing we’ll be ok.
No one knew what to expect from Poland. Everyone knew that they have their weight problems but it can go either way with them. It shows how much weight can dictate performance for lightweight rowing.”

Estamos na corrida!

A dupla Portuguesa após uma má largada para esta qualificação voltou ao normal ao realizar uma excelente regata que lhes permitiu o acesso à meia final fazendo uso duma característica que os distingue dos outros, uma parte final de regata absolutamente fantástica.
Tudo continua em aberto e a qualificação está mais perto.

Esperanças Olimpicas em Montemor

Dupla Fraga/Mendes em Montemor.

Classificação Olimpica

Terminou a votação que tencionava saber quais as hipóteses de qualificação das equipas portuguesas e o resultado foi surpreendente.
A equipa que tem tido os melhores resultados a nível internacional ( 2x ligeiro masculino) não foi a mais votada tendo ficado com 38% dos votos o que me faz pensar apenas que a luta por um lugar vai ser feroz com muitos e bons adversários.
A equipa mais votada com 44% dos votos é o 2x feminino ligeiro, que foi formada este ano e parece revelar, pelo menos a votação assim o indica, que tem um excelente andamento e que as hipóteses de qualificação são as melhores das equipas portuguesas ou então não vão ter adversárias!
Esta votação também pode levar à conclusão que, ou isto é mesmo verdade ou está tudo a gozar ou então afinal o remo português está fantástico e esqueceram de me avisar.
O meu voto vai para o 2x Ligeiro masculino o qual espero ver nos jogos olímpicos apesar de saber que a tarefa é árdua.
